Chain Hoists Overview

If you have ever seen an engine hoist lift an engine out of a vehicle or even into one, then you have witnessed the chain hoist system. While this is only one of the uses for this type of hoisting system, it is commonly used for this purpose. This type of hoist utilizes a pulley system in order to be able to lift heavy objects from one place to another. The hoist has a double pulley, containing a large and a small pulley at the top and another pulley that is directly connected to the object at the bottom. There are different types of the chain hoist system and many other uses for them, other than to hoist an engine.
A chain hoist is available in three different types. There are the electric hoists, the manual hoists and the air hoists. The electric hoist used for more industrial purposes. They have the ability to lift extremely large loads and give the person using the hoist the ability to move it vertically and horizontally. This is not true of either the manual or the air hoists. These two types also move loads much slower than electric hoists, but are able to make adjustments to the height of the load.
Pulley systems have long been used and connected with hoists. Rope pulleys have been used for centuries for purposes such as drawing water from a well. One of the first pulley systems to be used to hoist items was a single pulley system or a fixed pulley. This type of pulley did not work very well as the friction between the pulley and the rope was great and would not allow for the wheel of the pulley to turn correctly. The pulley systems that exist today, as are used with chain hoists, have come a long way since the existence of the fixed pulley system.

While pulling engines from vehicles is not the only job that chain hoists are able to do, it is one that they are commonly used for. The chain hoist makes the life of the mechanic much easier and allows them to do their work much more quickly. These types of hoists are utilized in so many industries because of their ability to hold more weight than a rope hoist. Whether air hoists, electric hoists or manual hoists are being used will depend on the industry.
